In the last generation Rolex created an entirely different movement to fit inside the 42mm case. Here it has managed to fit the existing caliber 3285 without having to create a separate caliber. The link 3285 first released in 2018 inside the GMT-Master II gives this watch an enhanced power reserve of 70 hours. Of course you'll find a link small Rolex coronet between link Swiss and Made signifying this upgrade.

Now full disclosure I hadn't had a chance to handle or try on an original 222 until I'd handled and tried on the new one this week in Geneva Vacheron's Christian Selmoni link walked me through the new model and he had an original from Vacheron's archives on hand as well. There is at first link sight link and touch not a whole heck of a lot of difference between the two but the changes though nominally minimal do add up to a new experience.

This is also a version of what collectors call a "Maxi Dial," which refers to the enlarged lume plots for the hour markers. If you quickly scroll back and forth between this watch and the watch directly link above, you'll spot it immediately. The goal here was to make the watch even more legible. Technically, this is a mark iii maxi dial, as link there were multiple configurations, but there we go again link getting a bit too far into the weeds...
