When Mental Health and Addiction Collide

dinaelison
Sometimes, mental health challenges do not appear alone. In many cases, they coexist alongside addiction - a situation known as co-occurring disorders. This means someone might struggle with a mental illness, like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or PTSD and a substance use disorder at the same time. Why does this happen? There are several overlapping causes: genetic vulnerability, stress or trauma, and sometimes using alcohol or drugs as a way to self medicate emotional pain - all of which can worsen both conditions. At our center, we believe healing happens when the full person is seen - mind, body, history, and habits. We are here to help everyone struggling with co-occurring disorders find hope, support, and lasting recovery.
