The recent updates in NFPA
1877, especially the 2022 edition, have significantly influenced our department’s selection of wildland firefighter PPE. The standard now covers not only traditional wildland firefighting but also urban interface firefighting, which required us to broaden our gear inventory to meet diverse operational needs. Enhanced design and performance requirements have pushed us to invest in higher-quality, more durable, and comfortable materials that provide better thermal protection. Additionally, updated sizing standards, including improved fits for female firefighters, have led us to reevaluate our sizing options to ensure all personnel are properly equipped. New testing methods for garment materials have improved the reliability of PPE, prompting stricter procurement criteria. Finally, the inclusion of updated fire shelter design and testing requirements has influenced us to upgrade our fire shelter equipment to align with the latest safety standards. Overall, these changes have helped us enhance the safety, comfort, and effectiveness of our wildland firefighting teams.
