The Hot Work Permit Authorizing Individual (PAI) plays a critical role in ensuring hot work is performed safely and in compliance with
NFPA 51B. Their main responsibilities include:
Evaluate the Work Area
Inspect the location to identify fire hazards and determine if it's safe to perform hot work, especially in non-designated areas.
Issue Hot Work Permits
Authorize and document hot work through a formal permit system, verifying that required safety precautions are in place.
Ensure Fire Safety Measures
Confirm that fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and other safety equipment are readily available.
Assign a Fire Watch
Determine whether a fire watch is needed during and after the work and ensure they are trained and equipped.
Verify Training and Competency
Ensure all personnel involved in the hot work are properly trained and understand fire safety protocols.
Enforce the Fire Watch Duration
Ensure the fire watch remains for at least 30 minutes after hot work concludes, or longer if required by conditions.
Cancel or Suspend Work if Needed
Stop the work if unsafe conditions arise.
