I’m about to order a few QSFP-40G-SR4 modules for short range 40G links inside our data center, and before I hit purchase I want to make sure I’m not overlooking anything obvious. Our environment has existing multimode MPO fiber, and 40G SR4 seems like the straightforward choice to leverage that cabling without running new lines.
A few questions I’m curious about from people who have already gone through this:
Are there any specific compatibility quirks with certain switch vendors when using QSFP-40G-SR4? I’ve heard that MPO polarity and breakout wiring can be a pain if not matched exactly.
Does fiber cleanliness and patch panel quality matter a lot more at 40G compared to 10G, or is it about the same?
Any surprises with heat or density when multiple QSFP-40G-SR4 modules are installed in a chassis?
Since these will be used on short internal runs, I want to be confident they’ll come up cleanly and stay stable long term. If you’ve ordered and deployed
QSFP-40G-SR4 recently, what would you double check before placing the order? And has your experience been solid overall, or are there things you learned the hard way? Thanks!
