As Ian notes, there is another option - Google Outlook Sync [2]. This allows Outlook to sync with a Google Apps email account over MAPI (which is the same protocol that Outlook uses to talk to Exchange). As Ian also notes, this is only available for Google Apps for Business, which costs $5/user/month. This option has worked WONDERFULLY for me.
During the free 30-day trial period for Google Apps for Business, that is :-) I can confirm that once you downgrade from Google Apps for Business to the free Google Apps, the Google Apps Sync agent stops syncing Outlook with the Google Apps mailbox.
