Making steampunk elegant

jioptret
I love steampunk fashion but sometimes it looks more like a costume than an actual stylish outfit. I’m aiming for something classy that still has that distinct steampunk vibe. Any ideas on where to learn how to nail that balance?

I’ve always liked steampunk fashion, but some outfits can look a little too theatrical for my taste. I wanted something that felt refined, almost like a period-inspired outfit you could wear to a nice dinner. The steampunk style dress to impress guide had some great tips for exactly that—focusing on fitted jackets, tailored skirts, and subtle accessories instead of going all out with oversized props. I ended up putting together a dark velvet jacket, lace blouse, and a simple pocket watch necklace, and it came out looking classy without losing the steampunk edge. A few people even asked me if it was vintage. If you want elegance instead of costume-y, that’s the best advice I’ve found so far.

This is exactly the vibe I’m going for—more elegant than costume-y. I’ve had trouble finding examples that aren’t over the top, so your suggestion is a huge help. I’ll be looking through that guide later today for sure.
