I recently came across a news update about Ludhiana’s ambitious push toward electric buses, and while it sounds promising, the reality seems far from smooth. The city planned a shift to cleaner transport, but now it looks like multiple roadblocks are stalling progress.
Here are a few issues I noticed from the recent reports and discussions:
Lack of charging infrastructure:Only a handful of charging stations have been set up, and most aren't even functional yet. Without proper fast-charging facilities, how can these buses run on schedule?
Delays in bus deployment:Even though a fleet of e-buses was supposed to roll out months ago, only a few are operational. Is it red tape, vendor issues, or lack of readiness from the transport department?
Poor maintenance readiness:Electric buses require a different set of maintenance skills and parts. Apparently, staff training hasn't kept up and workshops aren’t fully equipped.
Funding & PPP hiccups:Ludhiana’s model relies on a public-private partnership (PPP), but it seems like there’s confusion around contract terms, revenue models, and who’s accountable for what.
Environmental goals vs. ground reality:With Punjab aiming for green transport, these delays are disappointing. If a city like Ludhiana, which is fairly industrial and connected, is struggling — what does it mean for smaller towns?
