Choosing and Installing Wallpaper: Tips and Recommendations

pitafo83
Hey folks! I’m about to do some wallpapering in my living room, but I’m stuck on which type of wallpaper to go for. I’m looking for something modern but not too flashy. Any suggestions? Also, how do you all feel about peel-and-stick wallpapers? Are they actually as good as they sound, or just a marketing gimmick?

Hey! I’ve used peel-and-stick wallpapers a few times, and I actually think they’re great if you’re looking for a temporary solution. They’re super easy to put up, and you can even remove them without damaging the walls. The only downside is that they don’t always look as high-end as traditional wallpapers.

As for styles, there are so many options out there! I personally love geometric patterns or simple nature-inspired designs. You can find a ton of inspiration on Pinterest or even check out some of the modern wallpaper trends on this Wikipedia page if you’re looking for ideas. What kind of vibe are you going for in the living room?

Hey, I totally agree with you on peel-and-stick! I used them in my bedroom last year, and while they look fine, they did start peeling at the corners after a few months. If you want something more permanent, I’d go with regular wallpaper. The one thing I hate about wallpapering though is taking down the old stuff... it’s such a hassle! I was thinking of doing a light blue color with a subtle texture for my living room, something calming but not too cold. What do you think?

Thanks for the tips! I’m thinking about something calming too, but I was also considering a light grey with maybe a subtle metallic pattern—just a little shimmer to catch the light. Not too flashy, but a little sparkle could make it interesting. As for removal, I’ve heard the horror stories about old wallpaper being a pain to get off. Have you guys had any good experiences removing it, or is it just a nightmare no matter what?

Ahh, light grey with metallic accents sounds beautiful! It could definitely add some elegance without being too bold. As for removal... yeah, it's never fun. I've tried everything from steaming to scraping, but honestly, the easiest solution I found was hiring professionals. If you’re in Phoenix, there’s a site that does wallpaper removal from Phoenix really well wallpaper removal from Phoenix https://bestwallpaperinstaller.com/locations/wallpaper-installers-phoenix/. They were super fast and left my walls looking perfect! Might be worth checking them out if you’re not in the mood to deal with peeling layers for days!

Thanks for the tip! I’m not in Phoenix, but I’ll definitely keep that in mind for when I eventually move. 😅 The whole peeling process just seems exhausting, and I’d rather not risk damaging the walls if I don’t have to. You mentioned steaming—did that help at all, or was it just another frustrating step in the process? I’ve heard mixed things about it.

Oh, I’ll definitely look into that site if I’m in Phoenix one day! Thanks. Honestly, I think I might just bite the bullet and hire a pro for the wallpaper removal. I’ve heard the steam method works if you’re patient, but like @StylishHome said, it’s a lot of work for something that might not even work well. I’ll be sure to update here once I get my wallpaper up—hope it turns out as good as I’m imagining it in my head! 😅

Definitely keep us posted! Can’t wait to see how it turns out. I’m still figuring out the texture I want for my own place, but I think I’m leaning toward something with a bit of linen effect—subtle but still gives the wall some character. Anyway, I think the key to a good wallpaper job is prep work, right? I’ve seen some people skip the priming step, and it always ends up showing through the wallpaper.
